Charlie's has created quite a buzz in the cloth diapering world. It seems to be solving stink issues, repelling issues, and not-quite-clean issues for people with top loaders or front loaders, soft water or hard water, cold or hot washes, prefolds or pockets. Biodegradable: To qualify as biodegradable, a substance must be 80% degraded in 28 days. Charlie's Soap degraded over 97% in soil in 28 days. It is even certified safe for use directly in small lakes and streams (so go ahead and take it camping with you!)
Hypoallergenic: Charlie's soap was found by the Clemson University School of Textile Science to leave no irritating residues during their test for rinsability. This test was performed with 100% cotton cloth diapers. Poor rinsability was indicated by a weight gain after controlled washing and drying. Diapers washed in Tide Liquid (at recommended levels) gained nearly 2% in weight after only 8 washings. Those washed in Charlie's Soap (at recommended levels and 4 times recommended levels) gained no measurable weight at all, showing that no residues were left behind.
Front loader compatible: They recommend the full amount since Charlie's Soap dissolves completely and is low-sudsing.
Not a soap: The name stuck a long time ago, but this is a detergent, not a soap. For washing diapers, they recommend adding a tiny bit of sodium percarbonate (oxiclean) to the wash cycle of the diaper load.
A really nice company: These guys are really wonderful people. If you have technical questions about laundering with Charlie's they'll kindly give very patient and complete advice.

Powder or Liquid? They both work well for cloth diapers, in any water type, and they both work for both front and top loaders. Charlie tested pocket diapers and PUL covers with both liquid and powder to see if they affected the waterproofing differently. Here's what he had to say: "After washing with both liquid and powder, we have found that neither effects the waterproofing..." He also found that the fleece of the pocket diapers remained permeable. So the only reason to choose one over the other is personal preference. Powder is much cheaper to ship, so you'll get more washes with the powder for your money. But some people simply prefer liquid detergents. For that reason we will offer the liquid for drop ship to you directly from Charlie's. Please email us if you wish to purchase the liquid detergent.
